Vasectomy in Morehampton Clinic

Dr John O’Keeffe has been performing vasectomies for over 25 years, and has done nearly seven thousand operations. If you are considering vasectomy, the following is the procedure.

• Ideally the first person to see is your own GP, who can discuss with you and your partner all aspects of the operation. Many GPs have copies of our DVD ‘Vasectomy – the facts’ and can give you one. If not, just call us here at 01 2693921 or email morehamptonclinic@eircom.net and we can send you a copy. Having seen the DVD, and if you wish to proceed, contact us and we will book you in for the operation, which will be done on either a Wednesday or Friday afternoon.

• If you prefer not to involve your GP, of if you have none, then call us at 01 2693921 or email morehamptonclinic@eircom.net and we will send you a DVD and information leaflets.

• When you have seen the DVD, and wish to go ahead with the operation, you have two options. One is to make a counselling appointment here with Dr O’Keeffe, to discuss everything involved with vasectomy. The second option, if you feel that you are sufficiently informed, is to book yourself in for the operation.

Vasectomy in the Morehampton Clinic costs €500. This is a total fee, and includes the operation and all post operative management, including all semen analysis.

If you have a medical card, including the Doctor only card, there is no cost for a vasectomy in Morehampton Clinic. The only stipulation is you must pay a deposit of €100, which is returned to you on the day of the operation.

Vasectomy Method

There are various techniques of vasectomy operation, and these have gradually changed over the years. We have tried 'no scalpel vasectomy', but have reverted back to the more traditional scalpel vasectomy because it is technically simpler and can be easily performed without sedation, with local anaesthetic only. This means that the patient can drive himself home from the operation.

If you would prefer a 'No Scalpel' then tell us in advance, and this method can be used. It requires different instruments, which we must have ready in advance, but it is no problem to do so.

The most exciting development has been our change to 'Open Ended Vasectomy ', where the testicluar end of the cut Vas is no longer sealed, but left open. This means no back pressure into the testicle, and post-operative discomfort if now almost negligible. All details are on the DVD.
